Letter

By the Yuvraj Sambhaji Chhatrapati, President

I salute Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of Swarajya, for his exceptional contribution in the socio-cultural arena. And keeping in mind his ideal for empowering men and women of all strata of the society through a martial spirit for self-protection, we must collectively work for the emancipation of the “Rayat”, which is the core legacy of the Swarajya.

The famous martial art as practised during Swarajya, popularly known as “Mardani Khel“, is gradually diminishing due to lack of interest and participation by the people. I am afraid that this art and its social impact, which was so popular among the people, may disappear in a few decades if not popularised and encouraged.

With the moral responsibility of preserving our shared intangible heritage and also the direct benefits attached for the betterment of future generations, I have decided to foray into restoring the status of this sport, not only in Maharashtra but India at large.
I am proud of the people who are currently driving this mission through “Mardani Sports Federation India” and “Mardani Sports Association of Maharashtra” for making great efforts to popularise this sport.

This art form or sport has a known history of at least centuries and, therefore, its legacy and relevance should be recognised at a global level. But first, we must ensure that it gets the national recognition and citation as and where needed to formalise our effort, which would eventually create a long-term impact.

I appeal to everyone to come forward and actively support us in this mission.

Discover Mardani Sports History…..

Historically, this martial art played a crucial role in the military training of Maratha warriors, including the legendary Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who emphasized its practice among his soldiers. It is known for its expertise in weapon-based combat, featuring traditional arms such as the Dand Patta (gauntlet sword), Lathi (staff), Bhala (spear), and Talwar (sword).
Over time, Mardani Sports transitioned from a battlefield skill to a cultural heritage and sport, with efforts to preserve its techniques and legacy. Today, the Mardani Sports Federation is committed to reviving and promoting this martial art through training programs, competitions, and public awareness initiatives.
